How To Clean Babies’ Clothes

Caring for babies always requires the extra mile. We prioritize breast milk to feed them, use sterilizers for their bottles, and supplement their health with vitamins. But what about cleaning their clothes? Should we simply put their used clothes in the washing machine along with the others? What could we use in washing baby garments? And what would best remove the stains?

There are a lot of different stains that could go onto your child’s clothes. From drool, food, milk, and poop. When removing the stains, the first step is to normally rinse to remove small debris and then soak in water. Soaking helps remove the stain by loosening them. If the stain does not come off after this, then consider applying these additional steps.

For breast milk, formula milk, food stains, and spit-up, use an enzyme cleaner. These are non-toxic and effective when cleaning by breaking the stain. A good example is the Citra Solv Homesolv CitraDrain Natural Enzyme Drain Cleaner Valencia. If this does not solve the issue, apply a combination solvent and then wash as usual.

If you’re cleaning nappies with poop stain, consider using baking soda. There are other bleach options that you can try, such as the Hydrogen Peroxide and Oxygen Bleach, but these might be irritating than baking soda, which is nonabrasive and very light. Just pour some baking soda in the stain area and brush a bit before washing normally.

Conversely, most babies are often first introduced with fruits and vegetables, so these are also included in the top most possible stains on their garments. To deal with these, mix the soaking water with rubbing alcohol (1:1). If the stain still does not come off, lightly bleach the area by soaking it in a one-to-one mixture of white vinegar and water.

Baby products, such as baby oil, petroleum jelly, lotion, and other creams could also stain your baby’s clothes. To remove these, you could use cornstarch or talcum powder to absorb the oil; this is best when the stain is still fresh. Then, scrap off the stain after 15 minutes. Afterwards, apply a combination solvent, like Shout and Spray ‘n Wash before washing normally.

However, there are times when we can’t hand wash the clothes or follow the above instructions one by one because who has time for that? But that does not mean that baby garments would be left soiled. Thanks to technology, there are washers that are specifically made for baby garments. A good example is the Sumo Twin Tub Baby Clothes Compact Washing Machine.

There would also be times when washing baby clothes separate from our clothes would be difficult to do. In this case, Samsung Baby Care Washer, Stainless Platinum (for Baby Clothes and Reusable Diapers) saves the day! This has six additional rinses that removes detergent residue that can be harsh to your baby’s skin while still keeping your baby’s clothes, cloth diapers, and your own active wear both soft and clean. Finally, it also has a high temperature sanitization that safeguards your baby’s clothes from germs and bacteria. (Just be sure that before dumping the baby clothes, you’ve already rinsed them removing small stain debris.)

Washing clothes is already a task in itself but cleaning baby clothes is a level up endeavor. Good thing there are tips and appliances we could use to make this simpler.

How To Take Care Of Our Clothes

Clothes these days are no longer just body covering. They have become part of our lifestyle investments. From our favorite pair of jeans to our most worn tees, clothes have been fully integrated into our being. Since they posses relevance to our lives, how do we take care of our clothes so they won’t shrink, stain, tear, and fade, especially when we wash them?

To Avoid Shrinking

Clothes shrink when they are washed in warm water. So the best way to avoid shrinking of clothes when washing is to use cold water. The cold water would avoid the clothing to relax and release, which is often the top cause for shrinking or misshaping. Apart from using cold water, choose a gentle laundry cycle. A gentle laundry cycle avoids stressing the fabric and its seams that could sometimes make the garments shrink. This is especially applicable when washing fibers like cotton, wool, and cashmere. Lastly, choose the right laundry machine. You may want to consider front-loading machines as they are less destructive and will cause less shrinkage than the customary top-loading machines because the natural tumbling action in the front-loading machines is much more gentle.

To Avoid Staining

A major prevention to staining is to separate the garments. Never wash whites, such as abayas, with colors. Also, consider separately washing new clothes, especially dark, colored cottons because these may release a lot of dye.

If you’ve done this and stains still appear, then you might want to double-check your fabric conditioner. Most fabric conditioners are oil based, and if you use too much or added too soon or too late into the cycle and this hits your clothes without being diluted enough, it will cause oily spots on your clothes. Thus, make sure to dissolve the fabric conditioners first before pouring.

There’s another common type of stain: rust stains. These can come from rusts developing in your washing machine or the water you are using to wash your clothes. To avoid this, always check your washing machine for rusts, and make it a habit to run the water first. It would not also hurt to have your water pipes check for rusts.

To Avoid Tearing

Holes in our clothes could have many reasons. It could be from much chlorine bleach. It could also be from abrasive surfaces. Too high spin speed is also another cause as well as overloading.

Just like how to avoid staining, a major prevention to tearing is sorting your clothes well. Remember to not wash a delicate garment, such as scarves, with jeans or any clothes with zippers and other protrusions. Delicate garments that have lace and are made of silk could snag on zippers that could lead to tearing. Additionally, always zip, button, and fasten all clothing before washing to avoid catching other garments. If you can’t wash these separately, consider placing delicate garments in a mesh laundry bag before placing into the washer.

To Avoid Fading Quickly

A top advice to retain colors is to wash black clothes with other black clothes or with other dark garments. Fading happens when the dye runs, but when there are no lighter garments to soak the dark dyes, those dyes will be reabsorbed back into the black clothes they came from. Apart from sorting the colors, consider the weight, too. Doing so would protect the weave and color of your more delicate black garments.

Just like when avoiding shrinking of clothes, use cold water when washing colored clothes. This avoids the breaking down of fibers and its dyes.

When it comes to your washing machine, try using the shortest cycle possible because this means lesser chance the dye has to run and fade. You might also want to skip the dryer because the heat could facilitate fading. Instead, hung the clothes, which you have turned inside out, to dry or laid flat to dry, but when you do, make sure that you place them in an area away from the sun. Sunlight acts as natural bleach, which will fade your black clothes faster. Finally, consider adding vinegar, salt, black pepper, or baking soda, as these have ingredients that help retain colors.

Ironing Tips

Maintaining clothes these days takes more than washing and drying; there’s also the ironing. While some people might despise this task because of the heat, focus, and skill needed, crisp and wrinkled-free clothes are a must, especially when going out, so that leaves us no choice but to iron that piece of clothe. But for those who see ironing as something truly uninspiring, there are tips to follow making ironing faster and easier.

For example, if you are running late for a meeting but still needs to iron out your OOTD, sweat no more because using an aluminum foil under the ironing board cover would help you make the task faster. The aluminum foil reflects the heat of the iron thus adding more heat and cutting the ironing time in half.

Next, switching from high temperature to low then back again to high could take time, and in this era when time is more precious than ever, it would be best to iron garments beginning from those needing the lowest temperature then slowly moving to those requiring the highest. If you are unaware of which clothing should use the lowest and highest temperatures, you can check your iron’s manual, or simply begin with the synthetics, followed by satin, then linen, and finally cottons. If you are unsure about the temperature, do not worry because dry irons, such as the Black+Decker New Black & Decker Heavyweight Classic Iron Dry Clothing Flat Iron Model F54, normally have the Fabric Select Dial, which lets you easily choose the right temperature for your fabric.

Thirdly, we have the steam. The use of steam, which was done before via kettle, is one of the most effective ways to remove creases. However, who still has time to boil water and steam clothes? Practically, no one, but that does not mean creases have to be part of our get up. So to use steam without the kettle, there are irons with steam, such as the Philips PerfectCare Azur Steam Iron GC4919. By using irons with steam, softening tough creases in most types of fabric is easier and faster. Steam irons with a large number of steam holes are also better because these would produce fuller steam bursts that make removing the wrinkles faster.

Then, there is the wattage consideration. Here is the basic idea: the higher the wattage, the more heat. More heat means more efficiency thus lesser time you need ironing your clothes. Check out the Rowenta DW9230 Ferro Vapore Steam Iron that has the huge 2750 wattage.

Lastly, pick an iron with non-stick soleplates. Some irons in the market are made up of stainless steel or aluminum. While these transfer heat well, these are difficult to clean often requiring scrubbing to remove built-up starch or any dirt. If we rarely find time to iron, then most probably cleaning it is another dilemma, too. Not too fast. Non-stick soleplates are easier to clean; simply use a nylon pad with water and soap, and then wipe the iron’s bottom with it, and you’re done! A good example of an iron using non-stick soleplates is Black & Decker F210 Steam Iron With Nonstick Soleplate.

It is unsure whether these tips make ironing a less uninspiring task, but these surely make removing wrinkles and creases and making your outfit crisp and neat an easy feat. Do you know any other tips? Leave a comment to let me know. 🙂

Iconic Sunglasses

The word “iconic” (icon·ic) is an adjective that refers to something that is widely known and acknowledged. Examples of this could be iconic voice, such as Mariah Carey for singers or Morgan Freeman for narrators. This idea transcends in fashion, too. You have iconic hairstyle (James Dean’s slick back), dress (Angelina Jolie’s black dress with high slit in The Academy Awards, 2012), and make up (Gene Simmons’). Then there are the iconic sunglasses. Yes, this humble piece of accessory has made its mark in the history, too.

Let’s begin with Oliver Goldsmith Manhattans. This was popularly worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Anyone who wears a pair of this sunglass these days could get the instant vintage chic look. The Oliver Goldsmith Manhattans come in the elegant opaque tortoiseshell, preferred by Miss Golightly (Hepburn’s character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s), or an assortment of beautiful colors and patterns. Through the years, the classic frame has been also updated with high quality Zeiss lenses that provide both excellent UV protection and clarity of vision.

Who would forget the round frames that John Lennon, band member of The Beatles, pulled off in the 1970s? John Lennon’s Teashades, which is now more known as “John Lennon” glasses, which is an actual brand, are wire-framed lenses that shade the dilated pupils of the ’70s psychedelic environment. From 1970s, this style resurfaced in the early ’90s then again recently when Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Fearne Cotton and Beyonce adopted the trend.

We also have the Oakley Sunglasses, which rose to fame thanks to people’s fondness for red-blooded and Army-of-one aesthetic. Now, more and more are using Oakley Sunglasses; we can see these pairs being used by teens, soldiers, policemen, postal carriers, beachgoers, and even athletes! Why not? More than its looks, Oakley Sunglasses have made it a point to enhance its features from making seeing through their lenses better to giving more depth and definition, which heightens their adage that “Sunglasses Are Now Essential Equipment.”

In the 1950s, along with the backcombed and beehives trend, the Cat Eyes Shades came. While this first debuted as prescription lenses, it didn’t take long for it to crossover into the sunglasses territory. Since then, the sunglass has been used by many celebrities, such as actresses Reese Witherspoon and Anne Hathaway and singer Rihanna.

From 1950’s until present time, Ray-Ban Wayfarer is still known in the fashion world. While they may have sank in popularity several times in the past, they have always managed to make a comeback, which only proves its being classic in its own. Wayfarer frames are a trapezoidal shape that Ray-Ban created using the then newly invented and moldable material acetate. There is a long list of known people who have worn this, and examples are Emma Watson and Taylor Swift.

Finally, we have the aviators, which was developed by Bausch & Lomb. While Ray-Ban pioneered marketing aviator shades, there are more manufacturers nowadays that produce aviator style sunglasses, such as Saint Laurent, Gucci, Dior, and Givenchy. This sunglass with large, tinted, and reflective lenses of a modified oval shape and held in a thin metal frame has been worn by famous people in their most iconic roles, such as Tom Cruise in Top Gun and Bradley Cooper in The Hangover.

Which among these is the most iconic for you? Let me know in the comments section. 🙂

Which Sunglasses Should You Wear?

Sunglasses have made its way as an official part of our daily accessories. And while there are a lot of sunnies to choose from, using the one that best suits you adds more to your overall look. So which sunglasses should you use?

First, know your face shape. There are four most common shapes: heart, round, oval, and square. If you’re unaware about your face shape, you could ask a friend, or you could trace your face using a mirror and any water-based marker. To do the second option, tie your hair making sure that you can clearly see your face. Then, face the mirror. Using your water-based marker, trace your face’s shape using your reflection seen in the mirror. Once done tracing, compare your face shape with these descriptions and find out the best sunglasses for you!

Face Shape Descriptions Sunglasses
Heart shape This shape entails having a broad forehead with pointed and narrow chin and high cheekbones. Some of the known actors with heart-shaped face are Justin Timberlake,

Ryan Gosling,

Reese Witherspoon, and the Olsen twins.

People having heart-shaped face could use retro square, cat eye, or

Sporty-framed sunglasses. This is because any frames wider on the top than the bottom compliment well the shape.

Round shape A round face includes full cheeks and rounded chin, with overall matching length and width. Known personalities with round face shape are Kirsten Dunst, Mila Kunis, Charlize Theron, Emma Stone, Kanye West, and Jack Black.

For this face shape, consider using retro square, cat eye, and square frames. Overall, pick oversized, rectangular, and angular frames because these set off the roundness of the face. You can also consider finding sunnies with strong details to divert attention from the face’s roundness to the shades, and finally nose pads to keep off cheeks, especially when smiling while wearing the shades.
Oval shape Known as the most versatile face shape, an oval shape features a face that is longer than wide; high cheekbones and chin narrower than forehead are also its attributes. Famous people having this shape are Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, and Adam Sandler.

While all frames are fine with a person with an oval-shaped face (thus its being versatile), round, aviator, and oversized frames are the best. But if you want to explore other frames, just take note to choose frame size that maintains balance, so get a sunnies that is not too big and not too small.

Square shape This face shape has a prominent jaw and broad forehead and cheekbones. Observe this shape by looking at the faces of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt,

Arnold Schwarzenegger,

Lucy Liu, and Olivia Wilde.

Since the square shape is often thought of strong, to soften its features, it is best to use round, aviator, and shield frames. You can also opt for sunnies with thinner frames and neutral colors because these flatter the angular features.
